Futsal is a variant of association football that is played on a smaller playing surface and mainly indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salao and the Spanish fútbol de salón (colloquially fútbol sala), which can be translated as "hall football" or "indoor football." During the sport's second world championships held in Madrid in 1985, the name fútbol de salón was used. Since then, all other names have been officially and internationally changed to futsal. Futsal is played between two teams of five players, one of which is the goalkeeper. Unlimited substitutions are permitted. The game is played on a hard court surface and delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used. Futsal is also played with a smaller, less bouncy ball than a regular soccer ball. The playing style emphasizes improvisation, creativity and technique, as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. Click here for more information on the Futsal.
Throughout the Academy and among U.S. Soccer’s National Teams, a greater emphasis is placed on possession-oriented style of play, and futsal hones in on this approach from the front line to the goalkeeper.
“For our style of play with our Youth National Teams, the goalkeeper is used as a sweeper, so they have to be good with their feet, and that translates really well with futsal,” Lepore said. “In futsal, the players take 12 times as many touches than a soccer game and the ball stays on the ground.”
